Chamomile Teaches: It Is Safe to Exhale

This morning I drove to the beach for a walk with Brando, glancing at the golden hills covered with sagebrush, and smiled. A red-tailed hawk swooped in front of my windshield. Another sat at the traffic light and tilted his head as I drove by. I smiled again, knowing I am watched over and protected.

Years of working with nature have helped me develop a language of communication with it—through feathers, plants, scents, and the animal and bird messengers that appear, especially when it feels like there is no ground under my feet. My heart opens, filling with warmth and gratitude, because I am never alone.

And today, I want to remind you: you are not alone. Nature holds tremendous support with no secret agenda. Don’t forget to go outside and to smile more often.

I looked at my bedside table and smiled again. Lavender, Chamomile, and Walnut flower essences sit next to Tranquility and Self-Love roll-ons — good old friends and my go-to remedies for the past few weeks. They help me ground, recalibrate, and release tension in the nervous system, especially around my heart and solar plexus.

During a decade of working with plants, I’ve learned how they can support us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. They have developed my intuition and inner knowing. When we work with their energy, we establish an invisible bridge, a connection — like a direct line to each plant’s spirit. At times of need, we can call on them and see who responds.

For example, Chamomile:

As a herb, Chamomile soothes the physical expressions of stress: easing digestive tension, relaxing tight muscles, calming inflammation, and supporting deep rest. It speaks to the gut–nervous system connection, reminding the body that safety is possible.

As an essential oil, the soft, apple-like aroma of Roman and German Chamomile reaches the limbic brain within seconds, quieting looping thoughts and emotional turbulence. Just a few deep inhalations slow overthinking and remind your body it’s safe to exhale — there’s no need to hold your breath or clench your teeth. That is why Roman Chamomile is one of the stars in Tranquility's aromatic orchestra.

As a flower essence, Chamomile restores inner balance to those of us who are easily unsettled by outer chaos. It brings a serene, sun-like disposition and emotional steadiness to the heart and solar plexus, releasing tension stored in the belly and creating space for calm, clear presence. That is why I added Chamomile flower essence to the De-Stress flower essence formula.

Together, the plant in its three forms teaches the art of surrender: how to soften without collapsing, how to be calm without being lethargic, and how to return to peace without disengaging.

Life can be overwhelming. Stress, worry and uncertainty can knock us out of balance. It is essential to pause, listen within, tune into your body, notice where you hold tension, disconnect from the world's hustle and bustle even for a short break. Scan yourself with your inner eye and ask: Is my breath shallow? Is there a tension in my solar plexus, diaphragm and chest?

Are my neck and shoulders muscle tense and in spasm?

Are my teeth clenched and mandibular muscles hard as rock?

Is my nervous system over-wired by endless mind chat that goes in loops?

What do I really need now: a walk, a bath, a nap or watch a sunset sipping a cup of Chamomile tea?

The past few weeks reminded me how essential it is to have the right allies by our side: the plants' essences, their healing aroma, and the rituals that support us and bring back to balance. In times of extreme stress and pressure all we need is to pause, listen to our bodies and feel which remedy from our healing toolbox we need to take out today.
